Sankarabharanam (English: The Legend of the Blue God) is a 2013 Indian Tamil language family drama film directed by G. N. Ranganath, starring Vadivelu and Radhika Apte. The movie closely follows the story of Sankara, who emigrated from India to Ceylon in search of greater religious enlightenment This former village pussy-cat has to find his true self in a new land that's promised him everything but delivers nothing! When he meets the girl who will change his life forever, he finally finds exactly what he needed all along. What follows is an epic tale about love, laughter and honesty - but also deep lessons on courage, tolerance and grace. A tale about a boy from a small fishing village in India who dreams about seeing the world beyond the seas. Sankarabharanam is a story of a few people from a village who go out in search of happiness and how their lives come together in the process. The movie starts with Sankarabharanam dreaming about going to Ceylon, then his dad's friend advises them to shift to Madras for better livelihood. In Madras he gets acquainted with Adhiyaman aka Thatha, an old man living alone after getting divorced from his wife. The movie takes a flashback to how he lost his close ones, his son and wife. Thatha teaches Sankarabharanam the way to live. He also takes him to a temple where he interacts with Poochi. He tries to convince his parents for Poochi's marriage, but he is divorced and they oppose this. Ultimately, Thatha decides to get Poochi married even without his parents' approval. The movie continues through the incidents in Madras such as Sankara's conflict with a local liquor seller and etc. He meets Kaalai, a taxi driver and they become friends. They go on a trip where Sankara tries to help an innocent guy from getting arrested by tipsy police officers. Kaalai saves him. The movie ends on a happy note saying that Thatha, Poochi and Sankara live happily together in the same house.The shooting of the film started in August 2013. Shooting is taking place at locations across Chennai, Pollachi and Sriperumbdur. Rohit Ramachandran of "Nowrunning" said Kalyan Ram "doesn't have much to do here" but he has done "a decent job". Vadivelu's character's name is Sankarabharanam, which is also the name of an old Telugu movie by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao . The film takes the storyline from that movie. The film's music was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, with lyrics written by Na. Muthukumar & 'Vadivelu'.The film released on 6 February 2014 to positive reviews. "Indiaglitz" wrote that the film is an "avant-garde journey into the unexplored possibilities of Tamil cinema" and praised the director for being "mindful of Madras' colonial heritage".
