"Lawrence of Arabia is a 1962 British epic historical drama film based on the life of T. E. Lawrence." Lawrence of Arabia is a 1962 British epic historical drama film and about the adventures and experiences of T.E Lawrence, a British officer who has become known for his unconventional tactics and leadership during World War I. This movie was directed by David Lean, with an adaptation written by Robert Bolt and Michael Wilson. It stars Peter O'Toole in the title role. This movie had its world premiere at London's Odeon cinema, Leicester Square on 22 November 1962. Other British film cinemas refused to screen the film, so the UK premiere was at the Odeon in Leicester Square. The movie won seven Academy Awards in 1963, including Best Picture. It also received six Golden Globe Awards in the United States, including O'Toole for Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama. The movie has been preserved in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant. The film is ranked #43 on Empire Magazine's list of the 500 greatest movies of all time. Lawrence endured great hardships during his two years in Arabia between 1914 and 1918, beginning with his arrival at Hejaz (modern-day Saudi Arabia) in 1914. He was taught by a Bedouin chieftain, who gave him the name of the Lawrence of Arabia. He then became a spy for British intelligence organisations including the Arab Bureau. He learned guerrilla tactics from Arab warriors and Bedouins, and participated in the Arab revolt against the Turks under Faisal I of Iraq. In 1919 he returned to Britain a national hero. However, it was later found that many of his claims about Arabia were inaccurate; for instance he had exaggerated its wealth and potential to support an uprising. Despite this, David Lean's film version is considered one of cinema's greatest epics. It was a success from the start, despite being made during the Cold War when the Western world's admiration for communist Russia was at a low. It became one of the greatest commercial successes of all time, earning over ₤150 million in the United States alone. The film won seven Academy Awards in 1963, including Best Picture and O'Toole for Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama. In 1992, it was preserved by the British Film Institute as being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant. In 2000, a new restored version was released. This release included a documentary that linked Lawrence to Egyptologist Howard Carter and his discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. In addition, the film's score by Maurice Jarre was substantially revised. – – – – – – – – – Lawrence of Arabia is a 1962 British epic historical drama film based on the life of T. E.
