Get it now!#2) Inaccuracies in Judging a Person's Mental Health based on their Physical Appearance - Thayer E. Thomas, M.D., clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, remarks on the physical appearance bias that may lead someone to avoid someone who looks mentally ill if he or she is not dressed appropriately for being mentally ill. "A human face may be less deceptive than his body language. And although we're still far from perfecting a physical-only way of judging mental health (a capability that may one day help us help people with such conditions as schizophrenia), people often cooperate with doctors who appear more empathic and uncannily accurate in deciphering their patients' needs and needs to be helped." - Thayer E. Thomas, M.D. Thomas holds that our erroneous perception of others is very much related to the way they dress. If someone appears to be dressed appropriately for their mental state, we are less likely to think they are mentally ill. If someone dresses inappropriately, we are more likely to think they are mentally ill. As Dr. Thomas notes above, this is "less deceptive than his body language." Thomas notes that there is something of a prejudice among some medical professionals who believe that mental illness can be seen on people's bodies or faces or in the way people move and talk. He concedes this may not always be entirely unreasonable because it is true that certain abnormalities can sometimes be detected by observation, even if only at the margins of accuracy. This is not the same thing as saying, for example, seeing someone's face makes one have certainty about what it is they are feeling. Dr. Thomas notes that in his experience working with people who are mentally ill or disabled, he has found that this prejudice still exists among certain medical professionals. He writes that he does not believe that this prejudice in medicine can be eliminated because it is in part ingrained into our culture in time of which the mentally ill were often put in institutions and kept away from society. As a result of media coverage of mental illness throughout history, people have absorbed some stereotypes about the mentally ill, which are now held with varying degrees of conviction by many members of society today. Dr. Thomas states that it is important that medical professionals understand that some people with mental illnesses are able to conceal their illnesses, making it hard for some people to determine if they are truly ill or not. That is why he advocates for better understanding of the mentally ill by the general population, so one can develop their observational skills more effectively so they can avoid getting "railroaded" into judging someone based solely on their appearance. cfa1e77820
